The following bachelor thesis with the title “Accounting of financial instruments according to IFRS 9 with an analysis of first time adoption effects for companies at the DAX, MDAX and SDAX stock exchanges” is focusing on the theoretical basics of accounting for financial instruments according to the newly implemented IFRS 9 and delivers a comprehensive analysis of first time adoption effects for companies who are listed at the three major stock exchanges in Germany. Therefore, the first part of the thesis contains the theoretical guidelines around all IFRS and IAS standards which are connected to financial instruments as well as deep dive in the new accounting rules according to IFRS 9. The second part of the thesis comprises an empirical research with a defined analysis area of changes in equity, financial assets and KPI`s. The research took place for a sample of 92 companies and is based on the annual reports for the fiscal year 2018.
In general, the empirical research shows neither on index nor on field level a material impact on the analysed areas.
Many companies, especially in the United States, use share buybacks as part of their distribution policy to increase shareholder value. Even though share buybacks send a positive signal to the capital market participants often leading to higher stock prices, they are not always advantageous for investors. Little is known about share buybacks in the covid-19 pandemic 2020. This scientific paper aims to critically examine share buybacks concerning the current crisis by applying a benchmarking process to the performance of companies with huge share buyback programs. Moreover, experts in the field of study analyze the reasons for the performance and give an outlook as part of two further research questions. Using the S&P 500 as a benchmark, the analysis shows that these companies significantly underperformed during the crisis. According to the experts, capital-intensive, cyclical value stocks with low multiples and high debt have repurchased massive amounts in the past, leading to failure in investing in the business model's future viability and thus of the company. The crisis highlighted the weaknesses of share buybacks, which could lead to fundamental changes in the future. This research's findings are useful for investors who want to make more rational and differentiated investment decisions concerning share buybacks, as part of their due diligence process, during the next crisis.
Die Bedeutung preispsychologischer Effekte bei Events - Aktueller Forschungsstand und Perspektiven
(2019)
“Is it feasible to use flexible benefits as a possible employee retention tool? A survey about the possibilities of a value-oriented flexible benefits system as a method for innovative employee retention on the example of the organisation EVOMOTIV GmbH”
Being an engineering company, the current changes in the labour market caused by a lack of qualified experts, have had quite an effect on the employee retention of the organisation EVOMOTIV GmbH. Therefore the aim of this thesis is to develop a value-oriented flexible benefits system which can support the organisation to improve employee retention. This flexible benefits scheme enables employees to choose between various benefits, which are provided by the employer. First this thesis elaborates the theoretical framework of the conducted empirical study. Therefore employee retention, value-oriented human resource management and value-oriented incentive system are explained. As a result, the information collected through the theoretical study illustrates that there is a growing demand for a value-oriented flexible benefits scheme. The second part of the thesis examines the present state of the organisation EVOMOTIV GmbH and presents the results of the company data analysis. The aim is to identify the influences on increasing turnover of staff and employee satisfaction. From these results, it can be concluded that the main cause of the turnover is the business model used by the company and that the employee satisfaction has been increasing yearly. To develop such a value-oriented flexible benefits scheme, an empirical study was conducted together with the employees of the EVOMOTIV GmbH. The study consisted of questionnaires in combination with a workshop. The aim was to establish contents for the flexible benefits scheme based on of the values and needs of the employees. The questionnaires were used to gain more information on the present state. The result of this thesis is a new flexible benefits system, which is based on the needs and values of the employees in the EVOMOTIV GmbH. Moreover the thesis demonstrates that the system supports the improvement of employee retention, yet its efficiency is limited through the effect of the business model. To measure the efficiency and to keep the system up-to-date with future employee values, a long-term survey is recommended by the author.
This thesis aims to identify various individual definitions of the term agility in business literature and to analyse their core characteristics in order to develop a universally applicable agility model that helps to understand the focus of each agility definition. In the process, commonalities and differences between a large number of individual agility definitions are examined with the help of content analysis. The methodological procedure of the content analysis is based on word identification on the one hand and implication analysis on the other. With the help of the results of the content analysis, dimensions are developed which group commonalities of different definitions. By combining the dimensions and the results of the content analysis, a model is created that makes it possible to categorise all definitions of the term agility in the business literature and make them comparable with each other. The results of the individual definitions applied to the model show that there are different views and understandings of the term agility. For example, the term agility can symbolise extrinsic motivation or intrinsic motivation and a focus on threats or goals for the company. The agility understanding model manages to successfully map all the focuses of the authors of the agility definitions and shows that there is no universally valid definition of the term agility.
The main goal of this thesis is to examine various factors that determine the price of crude oil. The analysis shows that the interdependency between the crude oil price and the global economic situation has shifted over the past decades. The oil price shocks of the 1970s and 1980s and the behaviour of the oil price throughout the twenty-first century give some indication of the change of this relationship. Furthermore, OPECs market power and the role of supply and demand elasticities are taken into account. Alternative energies, fracking and the behaviour of supply and demand in several market conditions are considered in the determination process of the crude oil price.
In consequence of the prevailing low values of elasticities and the limited number of substitutes in the crude oil market, price rigging and the regulation of oil supply becomes apparent. This yields higher profits for companies and countries acting in this sector, especially for OPEC. Nevertheless, the analysis shows that OPECs market power varies from time to time and is strongly linked to the conditions in the global market. This positive correlation ensures that no oil price increase can be enforced in a period of falling demand. An important role for the determination of the crude oil price can be found in expectations by global demand towards future oil supply. Increasing inventory demand due to tightening oil supply conditions usually result in higher demand for oil, hence higher oil prices. Given the fact that crude oil is a finite resource that cannot be produced endlessly, future price increases are likely. This process can be slowed by the development of alternatives and the possibility to substitute oil. Innovations and improvement of these alternatives can shift demand toward renewable energy sources. In conclusion, there is an upward trend for the future price of crude oil. However, the actual future price of oil will strongly depend on the impact of each factor.
